Starter Stories – How it Began
In the most unlikely way! I began writing poetry at age nine. Here’s the first one:
The universe is like a dream.
Someday it will seem
That the sky will go.
And no one will know.
However, as I grew older and began to appreciate how certain authors wrote, something rooted in my belly until I finally acknowledged to Handsome how I wished I could write like Dick Francis. It took a long time.
When returning from a girlfriend trip, a friend asked us to write the opening paragraph of a book using the word “window.” I had nothing because I was afraid of saying something silly. And she knew my secret desire to write. When she noticed my fumbling, she said to email something the following week. So two days later, I sat down and worked and worked until I’d written eight chapters. She read what I’d done and said, “Keep going.” I did.
My tips for newbies are:
1. Don’t let anyone define your dreams. If you want to write, do it! And keep working it.
2. After my first big critique, the author said to write tight and suggested a book with that name. I read it and ding!, I began applying the thoughts to my work which improved tremendously.
