I decided early on while working on my “Book in a Month” Challenge that I would be forcing my husband to at least attempt a blog post to describe how he feels about writing a novel with me. I’ll be posting my own views on this topic later on in the month, well after the due date for our novel has hit.
Our conversation went a little something like this … in case you can’t tell Ron is my husband and the Me is well … me!
Me: Hey hubby?
Ron: Yes, baby?
Me: Would you write a little blog post for my little blog so the reader’s can see your prospective on our writing venture?
Ron: As you wish, baby.
Yes that’s a Princess Bride reference, he says it all the time … drives me nuts I mean really who speaks like that? And don’t let this sweetness get you sucked it, I had to remind him three more times before he came up with his post.
Well, it started out as one of many crazy thoughts I’ve had. I told my wife and she said it sounded like a decent idea.
I have to admit that there have been a few heated discussions about the direction the book should take, but I think that mostly it lead to more understanding of the characters and the story that we are planning to tell.
I know it isn’t exactly what she might write and neither is it what I would write, but I our collaboration allows us to see more of the character’s viewpoints as well as maybe discovering a few new things about each other.
Like most writers, at least a few of the characters are based on people we know, including a character based on both myself and my wife. It has definitely allowed us to see more deeply into our own personalities as well.
I myself have lived a fairly aggressive and violent life and my wife is generally passive and so the few fight scenes we have discussed have been at the very least, volatile discussions, but I believe that our different perspectives will help to draw a clearer more complete picture of the events unfolding.
I’m really looking forward to the end product of this collaboration and anticipate several more in our future, even if the only readers are my wife and I.
I enjoy getting this time together to create something from within us both.
With that being said I’m feeling pretty lucky now, while some only get to dream/write/read about their perfect man, I get to be married to mine.
