Jessica Subject went from fearing the possibility of aliens to reading and writing about them. Combining her love of both science fiction and romance, she creates happily-ever-afters for the entire universe. She lives in Southwestern Ontario Canada with her husband, two children and their seven year-old rabbit.
On my blog, I post book reviews, author interviews and news about my own writing. I also have a feature called “My Writing Family” where other authors write about the people who have influenced them the most in their writing.
Alisha: So glad to have you here to discuss your new book and yourself with my readers Jess. Let’s just right into it! You are a published author! What made you succeed where others fail?
Jess: I’m not sure. Some of it has to do with luck and some with skill. You have to be willing to learn in this industry and let go. Yes, these stories are your baby, but if you want to get published, you need to be willing to change them for the greater good.
Alisha: What advice would you have for someone who is just starting out?
Jess: The word ‘was’ is not your friend. Or any form of the verb ‘to be.’ Use it as sparingly as possible.
Also, have your work critiqued. Not by friends and family, but by other authors or aspiring authors willing to be brutally honest.
Alisha: It didn’t take you long to go from aspiring author and blogger to published author. How did you start on this path?
Jess: I connected with so many wonderful authors through various forms of social networking and took advantage of a great opportunity with Celestial Seduction.
Alisha: That’s right, you have recently published your short story, Celestial Seduction. Where did the inspiration for this story come from?
Jess: Another author suggested I write a science-fiction romance for the 1 Night Stand series for Decadent and I did. My muse presented me with the two characters and I ran with it. No real inspiration, just an active muse.
Alisha: Tell us about your book!
Jess: At the end of his obligated commitment to the Space Service, Frey Berger decides to stay on Earth to further experience human emotions rather than return to Ginnun where his intended has already mated with another. Looking for real love and someone to accept him for what he is, Frey enlists in Madame Evangeline’s popular dating service. Although he does not understand the concept of a one-night stand, he hopes to find his perfect mate.
Carrie Cooper’s husband divorced her for someone who could provide him with children, leaving her with little self-confidence and no desire to let a man hurt her again. Her best friend convinces her to join a dating service, claiming Carrie needs to get laid, while not winding up with a broken heart since her date requires no commitment after the night is over.
Although several misunderstandings nearly derail them before the date has even begun, Carrie and Frey end up becoming closer than they ever believed possible. Still, Frey will need to convince Carrie that her perfect mate isn’t human at all, and that one night can lead to a forever love.
Alisha: That sounds exciting indeed! With the release of Celestial Seduction I’m sure you already have more stories in the works. What are you currently working on?
Jess: Um, I just finished another short SFR and it’s now with my CPs and beta reader. I have another short story I want to write plus a novel that needs major revisions to get it ready for possible submission.
Alisha: Aliens seem to be your overall theme and genre. What attracts you to aliens?
Jess: I honestly used to be paranoid about aliens, believing them to be waiting in the dark corners to abduct unsuspecting humans. I got over it by writing about them. LOL. I mean, my favorite superhero, Superman is an aliens, so they can’t all be bad, right?
Alisha: Sounds like good logic to me! Do you plan, or have you started stories not related to alien life?
Jess: The short story I just finished does not involve alien life, at least not directly, but it is still SFR. The other short story I may write will be contemporary romance. I have other ideas for stories, but they are all SFR.
Alisha: Are any of your characters based on real life people? If so who?
Jess: None of my characters are based on any one in particular, but the people around me, strangers included are influential in how my characters react with each other. There are pieces of me in every character though, as they all come from my mind.
Alisha: Who is your favourite character from any of your books? Why?
Jess: I don’t particularly have a favorite character. As I mentioned earlier, they’re all a part of me, so I don’t play favorites. There are certain characters that are more fun to write though, like my protagonist in a SFR novel I have out on submission. I find the less restrained I can be with a character, the more fun they are to write. I guess it really should be that way with all my characters, but with some it’s just easier to let go.
Alisha: Thank you taking the time to answer my questions Jessica, it’s been a pleasure!
Jess: Thank you Alisha for having me and for taking the time to read Celestial Seduction! It’s been a pleasure.
