A gust of wind blew through her hair as Thalia searched the horizon. She knew the ghost ship could only be seen at midnight when the moon was full and she had every intention of seeing it.
Clutching the note she wrote days ago she took a deep breath. This was it. It was the answer to all her problems, all her worries and would soon be her freedom. Thalia was promised to the King Arman of Nigeria, a man who wanted nothing from his wife but blind obedience and servitude. She couldn’t live like that. She refused to live like that.
As the moonlight touched the waters edge she could see the water begin to slowly shimmer. Her old wet nurse had told her stories of such things but she never believed. Ghost ships, even pirates were now nothing more than fairy tales. She didn’t believe then, but she prayed tonight that the stories were true.
‘The ghost ship returns every third night of the full moon. If you are brave of heart, and hold a pirate’s spy glass you will be allowed admittance.’ When her nurse maid told her this she handed her a gold spy glass with a pirate crest carved into
the side. She had kept the spy glass all these years, never truly believing but always wanting to.
As the water shimmered she could see the moon’s reflection on the water. She could see dolphins jumping out of the water further off and an old fishing boat pulling into the small harbor. What she couldn’t see was the ghost pirate ship.
She hung her head. It was a long shot, she knew the chances of it being true were slim but she needed to try, she knew that as well. Tomorrow she would wed the King and be his slave, his queen. Bitterness filled her mouth as tears streamed down her cheeks. It was an impossible dream she knew this, but still a dream she held onto for the past month since hearing of the King’s plans to marry her.
Perhaps marriage wouldn’t be so bad. It was true she had never met the King before, she could fall in love with him. Of course as her mother told her, marriage has very little to do with love.
A breeze blew through the window again causing her hair to whirlwind around her face. She took in another deep breath enjoying the smell of the salty sea air.
She turned the spy glass over in her hand. The moonlight now shown into her window, the beams danced off the gold.
‘What if?’ She thought to herself.
Then she slowly raised the spy glass to her face. Her bright emerald eye peered through the glass while the other closed. She could still see the dolphins, and the old man tying up his boat. Then not too far from shore she could see it. Her heart skipped a beat, the stories were true, her salvation, her freedom waited for her just beyond the shore.
